sometimes love looks like bacon :: a tale of 2 breakfasts

Last week, Anna Grace and I went on a little grocery shopping and ice cream run. If you follow me on instagram, you probably saw the behind-the-scenes picture of our excursion. We hit up Publix for some fresh herbs and peanut butter, then popped over to the frozen food section. You see, last week Jonathan came home and told me how hungry he’s been during his day. Feeling like he’s just starving by the time lunch rolls around.

Being the wise wife I am {ahem}, I thought the issue might have something to do with his breakfast that is either rushed or non-existent. So I snagged some bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits from Jimmy Dean. There were other meat options like sausage and chicken or even meatless. But I know my guy and his undying love for bacon, so I had to make sure it was part of the breakfast equation.

My goal was to sneak the individually wrapped sandwich into his bag along with a little love note which happened to be written on the back a very expensive and high-class index card.

He always brings his bag home from work.
Except when I have plans for it. womp womp.

So, I went with plan B and just gave the sandwich & note to him personally, after warming the biscuit in the microwave for a few minutes.

“Thanks! … this is delicious!”
“Oh good! Do you mind if I take a quick picture of you with it and your coffee?”
“Um. I look really groggy.”
“No, you look great!”
*snapsnapsnap*

Okay, so he did look a little groggy.
But at least he was showered and ready for the day, which is more than I could say for myself at that moment. Which is also why I didn’t take a selfie at that point.

You may have noticed the breakfast bowl I also bought? I usually don’t buy or eat sausage, but the egg white + turkey sausage + potato combo sounded really tasty, so I went for it.

Of course, this all took place a couple hours after Jonathan left for work. In the meantime I had time to shower & help my kiddos start their breakfast. At which point I attempted to eat my breakfast bowl in a state of serenity and peace. I mean, that’s what I always do.

I was genuinely surprised at how delicious my breakfast bowl tasted. I actually loved the turkey sausage! I thought the egg whites might be rubbery after being frozen and warmed in a microwave, but they were light and fluffy, just like they never always taste when I make them at home. Because I’m a good cook like that.

Nerd alert: I was really happy to see that there are 22 grams of protein in this bowl, but only 240 calories. I love getting a good protein punch in the mornings, but was especially happy for some extra this morning because Jonathan and I had a running workout in the evening.

Paired with my homemade chai latte, this breakfast was way better than any slow weekend breakfast I’ve ever made. And the fact that I only had to pop it in the microwave for a few minutes? Game changer, folks.

By the way, my homemade chai latte sounds much fancier than it really is. I just steeped a bag of tea, poured in a splash of whole milk, frothed it up with this, and sprinkled some cinnamon sugar on top. It was quite tasty.

Just a warning, though.
These breakfast bowls seem to attract small monkeys, about the size of a 3 year old boy. I don’t know if this is a recurring thing or if it just happened with my particular bowl, but it’s definitely something you want to be aware of. I’ll keep you updated if it happens again.

In the meantime, may you have happy + delicious breakfast experiences that take minimal prep time and involve no monkeys.
Or at least, let’s hope they’re cute monkeys like mine.

  4. Thank you, sweet Christina!!

  5. I totally agree. When I was a little girl, my dad cooked our breakfasts on the weekends. He’d start with BACON! We could smell it sizzling on the stove just as we were waking up. Love=Bacon? Yes!
